10 Steps to Take After a Car Accident

08 May 2021

There are tons of news we hear about car accidents. Many of the property damage as opposed to damage to other drivers, but this is still an alarming issue. Of course, you never want to be in an accident, but chances are you’ll be involved at least once in your lifetime. If you’re ever involved in a car crash, here’s a step-by-step guide on what to do after the crash occurs.

Don’t Drive Away

This may seem obvious, but it can be difficult to keep calm and keep your bearings if an accident does occur. Just remember that you should always stop and assess the situation. Never drive away from the scene of an accident, even a minor one.

Give Other Drivers Warning

Once you’ve been involved in an accident, there’s a likelihood that other drivers will be distracted by the scene or won’t see it at all until it’s too late. In either case, you should do everything possible to “protect the scene.” Set up flares and keep your flashers on to let others know that there’s an accident in the area and to be extremely cautious when approaching your vehicle.

Make a Record of the Accident

You should be going through what happened (which you’ll probably be doing anyway on your own) to tell the police what happened accurately. If you have a dashcam, make sure to retain the footage. If you don’t have a dashcam, do your best not to make guesses or assumptions about what happened. State only what you know.

Take Pictures

Everyone today has a camera on their phone. After the accident, do your best to take pictures of the crash site, both for the police and for insurance purposes. If you’ve been injured in any way, take a picture of your injuries as well. Don’t do anything that interferes with the police if they’re there, but document the accident in much detail as you can.

Exchange Information

It’s common for the investigating officer to receive information, but if there are no police present, you should take the name, address, and number of everybody involved at the crash site. Not just drivers, but passengers as well. Obtain any insurance information possible by asking for an insurance card.

Report the Accident

After you’ve taken the information, it’s time to report the accident to your insurance company. You can find out if you have extra coverage based on your coverage. Be sure to be truthful to your insurance company about any medical damage you may have experienced.

Seek Medical Attention

In many cases, injuries from car accidents are not immediately apparent or obvious. However, a range of medical complications can arise from a car accident. To make sure you’re as fine as you feel (or if you don’t feel fine) it’s important to seek medical attention. Accidents that seem minor can have an impact on the spinal cord, which results in complications down the road, so it’s important to make sure you have no such spinal injuries.

Keep a File

Once you’re safely out of the accident and have been checked out by a medical team, it’s important to remember to keep all of the accident details in a file. This information should include a claim number, the claim’s adjuster who’s handling the claim, names and phone numbers of any necessary contacts, and any contact information related to other parties involved which you may need to pay on a later date.
